More than a thousand garment workers of The Rose Dresses were hospitalized on Sunday morning as they fell sick after drinking contaminated water at the factory in Jamgora, Ashulia, which is owned by the current BGMEA President Mr. Atiqul Islam.
Factory sources said the workers of The Rose Dresses, owned by BGMEA president Atiqul Islam, fell sick after drinking water from the tap of the factory during their breakfast around 10am.
The sick workers were admitted to different clinics and hospitals including Savar Enam Medical College Hospital with complaints of frequent vomiting.
Some of them were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
High officials of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry and police visited the spot. Meanwhile, some RMG workers staged a demonstration at Jamgora, protesting the incident and demanding an exemplary punishment of the factory authorities.
Later, authorities declared The Rose and eight other garment factories of the area closed for Sunday.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avoid any trouble.
Earlier on Friday, 150 workers fell sick after eating food at the same garment factory, and the factory was declared closed for Saturday.
