Workers of Radiant Garment garment factory went on a rampage following the death of one of their female colleagues being hit by her factory cargo truck at Jirabo inTayebpur at Ashulia on 20 April 2013, Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Shahida Begum, 55, worker of Radiant Garments at Jirabo in Ashulia. She was an “Operator” and worked on the fifth floor of the factory with a card#001.
According to local law enforcers, Shahida died on the spot at about 8 AM as a cargo truck hit her while she was crossing the road. However, according to local reports and our sources, Shahida died at 7:50AM while crossing the main gate of the factory which was unattended by its guards when she got hit by the cargo truck of the same factory she worked in.
Locals later seized the truck, but its driver managed to flee the scene.
Angered at the accident, workers of Radiant Garments vandalized the windows and furniture of the factory. As a result, the factory authorities declared the factory being closed for the day following the unrest.
This incident displays a grave carelessness by the factory authorities in maintaining security and thus ensuring worker safety at factory premises, which made the factory authorities weary of giving an immediate response and sharing responsibility which worked on making the workers increasingly restless.
Later, the workers blocked Abdullahpur-Bypile road for an hour protesting the road accident.
