4 garment workers reportedly dead and 12 injured in Kashimpur, Gazipur.

Our sources informed us today that 4 workers have been fatally beaten at a garment factory on 7 March 2013, in Kashimpur, Gazipur.

Workers reported that they had been informed about being paid their respective monthly wages after the 20th of the month, where monthly wages are usually paid within the first week of any running month.

After more consultation with the factory management, news started to fly that the worker’s might not get paid at all for the month by the owners. Some factory workers started an unrest on the basis of this news and made it an agenda to put all work at a halt for over an hour before lunch.

The agitated workers gathered in larger numbers and started shattering glasses of three neighboring buildings owned by the Beximco group. To control the unruly mob agitating within the factory walls, the General Managers and Production Managers of the accused factory allegedly used iron rods and other tools found within the building. 12 workers had been reported injured and 4 dead in the action.

The brands sourcing at the moment in the Ready Made Garment factory at riot are H&M, Zara and Wal-Mart and many others. No media coverage other than a short radio broadcast had been done on the incident.
