Work at halt in Gazipur

Workers at Kaizer Knit Wear Limited, Kashimpur, Gazipur, demand a raise in their current wage. The protest led to the owner closing all three of his factories down on 2 March 2013, for an indefinite amount of time.

The factory is situated above the floors of owned by the Mondol Group in a 6 storey building. Two other factories of Kaizer Knit Wear are in neighboring locations. Both factories, Mondal and Kaizer, are owned by the same family. Kaizer Knit Wear Limited and its two other sections houses more than 3000 workers in total.

The workers at Mondol demanded their basic wage be increased to BDT 4500-5200, especially in the sewing section. After weeks of protest their wages had been augmented. Kaizer workers demanded the same around a week ago, but their pleas were left unanswered.

It was reported that the factory had no trade union and no functioning participation committee. Workers at Kaizer peacefully tried to negotiate their way into an understanding with the factory owner, but it all in vain. The owner closed the factories down altogether.

Different worker rights federation representatives rushed to the scene after being informed by Mondol workers to pacify the dilemma. Workers are uncertain how they will get by in the pricey capital.
