150 Injured in Stampede for Fire Accident

According to our source, more than a 150 Ready-made Garments workers were injured on December 5, 2012, in a stampede at The Chittagong Fashion Limited. A gas leakage from an ironing table came in contact with a short circuit from an unsafe electric line, presumably after lunch hour. The explosion as a consequence engendered a fire in the Group’s Ironing section which is situated on the 5th floor of its building in Mirpur 14.

The fire alarm going off gave rise to havoc inside the factory premises, causing the workers from all units to rush toward the exit. The Chittagong Fashion Limited housed more than 800 employees, all of whom dashed toward the main gate on the lowest floor.

Workers inquired about the devastating incident responded that the factory’s owner had been ignorant about the safety issues at work place. No deaths were recorded, neither was there any great loss of machinery or goods.

All injured workers resumed work from the following day. No medical attention or compensation was administered by the factory management.
